Unlocking Your Child's Love for Reading: A Guide to Finding the Right Books
Are you a parent facing the challenge of providing for your family while ensuring your child gets a quality education? Imagine the scenario where your child attends a school, and unbeknownst to you, they are being influenced in a way that may hinder their future success. It’s a concern many parents share – the fear that their child may struggle academically, possibly facing a lifetime of challenges. The cost of illiteracy is high, both for individuals and society.
I understand this concern because I was once in the same position as a student who graduated with basic reading and writing skills. However, I was determined to bridge that gap, and I succeeded. Your child’s situation may be similar, or it may be different. That’s why I’m here to assist you in finding the right books to ignite your child’s passion for reading and to help you identify any reading difficulties they may have.
Where to start
So, how can you find the books that will captivate your child’s interest in reading?
Assess Your Child’s Interests: Start by understanding what your child enjoys doing in their free time.
Determine Their Reading Level: Have your child read a chapter aloud to you. Do they struggle with most words?
Check Their Comprehension: Ensure they grasp the content. Can they explain the main idea the author is conveying?
Engage in Oral Book Reports: Ask your child to provide an oral book report. For instance, if they’re reading a level reader like “Going to the Sea Park,” ask questions like: Who are the main characters? Where did the story take place? What did they like or dislike about the book?
These questions encourage your child to share their thoughts on the book. If they found it boring, that’s okay! Finding the right book to pique their interest can be challenging. That’s where I come in. When you participate in my reading workshop, I’ll assist you in selecting the perfect books and answer any questions you may have. Let’s embark on this reading journey together to nurture your child’s love for reading.
Discovering the Perfect Books to Spark Your Child's Love for Reading
How to find the right books with a compelling plot that engages your kids to read. Follow these suggestions:
For Funny and Fun Books: If your kids enjoy humor, check out “Scurvy Dogs.”
For Drama and Tension: If they like stories with conflict and tension, consider the “EJ12 series” or “The Last Thirteen series.”
For Sci-Fi and Fantasy Enthusiasts: If your kids are into science fiction or fantasy, explore “The Sword of Kuromori” or “Real-Life Mysteries.”
Adventure and Action Lovers: If they prefer adventure with action, graphic novels like “King Arthur” or “Thor” might be perfect.
Creative Activity Books: For kids who enjoy doing things, check out sticker-dolly books or build-your-own… sticker books.
Animal Lovers: If your kids adore animals, “Fizz the Police Dog” is a gender-neutral chapter book about 50 pages long. Perfect for boys that like quick, easy reads.
Sometimes creating a comfy space helps kids dive into books when they’re bored. So ask your kids to give you advice and find out what motivates them, and keep trying.
Do you have a reluctant reader? Then you may want to get them the “Read with Usborne Level reader: The Reluctant Dragon.” Please comment below or, better yet, host your reading workshop.
Last but not least, sometimes starting a reading frenzy with a pledge-based program can get your kids excited to read. Set up a competition among your kids to raise money for books. The more they read, the more money they get.
