What I find concerning is the fact that schools don’t teach reading instruction and many teachers don’t know how to teach reading.
Reading is hard to teach. English is the hardest language to learn with all the different sounds and sound combinations and the exceptions to the rule and the exceptions to those exceptions and some rules don’t follow logically. So a child learning to read needs to be expressly taught.
Which is why ONLY 36% of our nations kids are proficient by 4th grade. 64% are reading below proficiency.
If we would just teach reading in elementary, there wouldn’t be a need for literacy specialists. Because teachers would all see themselves as such.
Which is why a child that doesn’t like to read won’t read! Because that child associates the process of reading as hard and painful instead of pleasureful. Sandy Lopezvilla
Reading is fun once you understand how it works and can decode the language.
And the difference in a good student and a poor student is a parent doing their part to support their child’s education.
