Protecting Freedom – Embracing My Cuban Heritage and Charting a New Path

Sept. 10, 2023 – Marla Fernandez

In 1961, my grandparents and parents embarked on a journey that would forever shape the course of our family’s history. They fled the oppressive regime of Fidel Castro in search of cherished ideals: liberty and freedom. Leaving behind their home, savings, precious artwork, dear friends, and even family, they sought refuge in the vibrant city of Miami, Florida.

Such moments in life are etched in memory, and for me, they hold a profound inspiration. However, it’s often the pain and adversity associated with these moments that serve as the crucible of resilience and determination.

Growing up, I recall my mother’s words as she spoke of those times: “Batista is a dictator,” she’d say. “You can consume, but your political speech is restricted.” It serves as a stark reminder of the contrasting political landscapes in Cuba and the United States.

When Cuba gained independence from Spain in 1890, it looked to the U.S. system as a model. The crucial difference, however, lies in the form of government. While Cuba has a centralized government, the United States adopts a decentralized approach, with a Republic that emphasizes individual rights and state sovereignty. As James Madison articulated in Federalist Paper #39, we are not a democracy, nor a national government; we are a Republic.

Over the course of a century, it seems we have gradually been “dumbed down” and demoralized. Our education system has faltered, leaving our children without essential skills such as reading, writing, and proficient mathematics. Shockingly, most high school graduates today are functionally illiterate.

So, what can we learn from Cuba’s turbulent history? It is a stark reminder that freedom is fragile, easily lost if not zealously protected. Our answer lies in the Constitution, the bedrock of our nation, and the embodiment of our American identity. It is the solution to our problems, and it defines us as Americans.

We must unite around this timeless document, reaffirm our commitment to its principles, and strive to preserve the liberty it guarantees us. The Constitution isn’t a relic; it is a living testament to the enduring power of democracy and the rule of law.

Now, I have embarked on a new journey, starting a mediation business with the firm belief that I can resolve conflicts and bring about peaceful resolutions. As a mediator, I am committed to helping individuals and organizations find common ground and avoid costly and time-consuming legal battles.

While I have transitioned into the realm of conflict resolution, my passion for safeguarding freedom remains unwavering. I am running for House District 3 with a firm belief in the enduring promise of freedom. I want us to be free, to protect our cherished liberties for ourselves and future generations. I invite you to stand with me in this endeavor, to keep our cause in your thoughts and prayers, and if possible, to support my campaign with a donation of $10 or more.

Together, we can honor the sacrifices of those who sought freedom, chart a brighter future where liberty reigns supreme, and resolve conflicts with wisdom and understanding. Let’s remember that freedom, once lost, is rarely regained, and let’s work tirelessly to ensure that it remains the cornerstone of our great nation.

With deep gratitude and a steadfast commitment to our shared values,

Marla Fernandez
